Where do games disclose AI use?
Search developers’ Steam disclosures, compare classified AI use across
games, and follow recorded changes.
This index adds cross-game classifications and statistics to
statements published on individual store pages.
Groups reflect automatic analysis of public disclosures; mature records are excluded. These counts do not measure AI use across all of Steam.
Missing or unclear statements cannot establish whether a game uses AI.
NOTES: This work was set up in September 2022. For the purpose of conducting academic research on emerging technologies, AI image generation technology (which was still in its early stages of development at the time) was used to assist in processing the visual effects of some content, and an AI music generation tool was used to create the background music. In order to avoid the abuse of artificial intelligence generation tools, only the default data sets provided by AI tools are used during the development process. All usage methods include:
1. Process the real photos to create "alien" and "distorted" effects;
2. With the "abstract image generated based on the provided keywords", manually perform secondary design, reconstruction, and drawing;
3. Generate music clips that fit the atmosphere by adjusting parameters such as musical instruments used and pace, then perform secondary editing to them.
All contents involving artificial intelligence were completed before 2023. After that, AI image generation technology has been completely stopped, no longer and will no longer continue to be used for development.
For all AI-generated image assets utilized in the work, this work only reserves the right to use.
We do not use unedited AI-generated content - every image in the game is handcrafted by our 2D art team. However, they use AI-generated images as rough drafts that are later polished or fully reworked by the 2D art team. We only use AI-generated images as drafts for art assets. All other assets - texts, music, UI - are 100% human-made. We would not want to diminish the efforts of our 2D art team who spent countless hours working on the game to bring you the best experience - we just feel the need to be transparent. We also want to highlight that all images are processed by human artists in the end.
Generative AI has been used in the creation of the 2D graphics, music, voices and sound effects present in this game and it's marketing materials.
We are in the early days of AI. I think it's important for creators to experiment with it, but doing so morally seems impossible.
As a compromise I've pledged 50% of the game's income to hire human artists.
In the third part of the game, the AI generates part of the image to express the influence of the products of the times on our understanding of the world.
Occasionally on real-life blink in-game textures may swap to pre-rendered AI variants of the textures for a moment.
These textures were created with an outdated image generation model on local hardware to facilitate hallucinations. There was no new training of models for SWEYET(etc.), no wastage of water, etc. No generative AI runs on users machines, there is no runtime generation.
In the development of our game, we utilized AI-generated content to enhance various aspects of the game's production. Specifically, AI tools were used under a licensed agreement with Yakno to assist in generating vocals, lyrics, and certain visual elements.
The AI-generated vocals and lyrics served as a creative foundation, providing inspiration and support in crafting the final musical pieces featured in the game. Additionally, AI was employed to create preliminary images, which were further refined by our design team to achieve the desired artistic vision.
Generative Artificial Intelligence Usage in the Game
Character Behavior and Interactions: AI algorithms dynamically control the behavior and interactions of in-game characters, creating a more immersive and unpredictable experience. Characters exhibit aggressive behaviors and can attack the player with non-bloody strikes.
I used CONVAI to generate an AI character: the Sage, in my app that is able to have real-time dialogue. The player can interact with it by entering text. The AI will only explain more background story to the player, and guide the player towards the ending of the storyline.
All of the characters in the game are represented as damaged marble sculptures. The choice of this particular style was absolutely conscious and one of the main ideas was to evoke a certain feeling. This is pretty much how objects of material culture from classical antiquity came down to us. This is how we frequently perceive classical antiquity. And it fits the subject matter of these tragedies quite well.
The imagery was generated with the aid from the AI and then tweaked manually.
Carceri's story portrays a world made by programs, for programs. While ALL the writing, music, and 3D art in this game was created by a single human being, there is an Art Gallery in-game that contains 50 images, 17 of which have been generated by AI, (that are all clearly marked as such). These are fictionally portrayed as art works created by the characters (programs) of this world.
No names of modern, living artists were used to generate these images. The prompts were words such as: Hudson River school, old masters, Delacroix, robots, abstract geometry, landscape. From there, I photo-shopped all images so that none are 100% unaltered from the generation process.
Acknowledging generative imagery's existence is important to the world-building and meta-narrative of Carceri, so this was the fairest way I could think to include a small dose of these works, which are divisive by their very nature.
Artificial Intelligence was used to generate drafts of written content and images, then we parsed the results, selected and arranged the most valuable assets to be in this game.
Translations done by humans, but aided by DeepL; most graphics used Leonardo and SD as tools; a few of the audio files were generated with the help of Suno and Udio, while most were made by human artists without AI help. 11.ai was used to improve the voices of the human voice actors.
Artificial intelligence was used to create transparent textures and improve image quality. In some cases, photos were processed using the Prisma filter app.
AI Integration in Our Game
Our game incorporates generative artificial intelligence specifically for creating background music and enhancing visual elements. Here's an overview of how AI is utilized:
AI-Generated Background Music:
The background music in our game is generated using SUNO, a state-of-the-art AI music generation tool. This allows us to provide a unique and immersive auditory experience for players, ensuring that the music dynamically adapts to the gameplay and enhances the overall atmosphere.
AI-Generated Gun Icons:
In addition to music, we have also utilized ChatGPT to generate a few gun icons, which were then further refined and customized. This combination of AI generation and human touch ensures that our visual assets are both innovative and meticulously crafted.
Character voices are produced by VOIVEVOX software and licensed by the voice owners.
Songs are sung by AI virtual singers of ACE software, and have obtained relevant commercial licenses.
The English text of this game is translated by AI Translator, and the translated text is from the game script.
Artificial intelligence was used to speed up the process of drawing rough versions of characters and some backgrounds for illustrations. The initial images and subsequent processing were made by a human. All the final images have been reworked and modified by several artists.
