art
Marketing key art (Steam store capsules, library art, page background) and the comic-book intro trailer were generated using Fal.ai's Flux 2 image diffusion model. Initial concept sketches and in-game sprite references were generated using ChatGPT's image generation, then hand-cleaned and integrated by the developer. All assets are pre-rendered at build time and shipped as static files within the game package - no generative AI runs during gameplay, and no AI is used to generate live content for players. AI was not used for code, voice acting, music, or any system that interacts with the player at runtime.

Pre-generated content (created during development, not at runtime): - In-game parody movie cover art: generated with AI tools and manually reviewed by the team to ensure all covers are original parodies and do not reproduce trademarked logos, brands, or copyrighted characters. - In-game parody movie titles and descriptions: drafted with AI assistance and manually edited by the team. - In-game UI and text translations into the 8 supported languages: produced with AI assistance and reviewed by the team. No live generative AI is used at runtime. All AI-assisted content is baked into the game build. Core game assets (code, gameplay design, UI art, character and shop sprites, music and sound effects) were NOT generated with AI.

Netshell
Live AI
text
Netshell uses AI to power its characters. The NPCs you meet on the in-game forums and IRC read what is happening in your playthrough and respond in character, so their messages and forum posts are generated rather than pre-scripted, and each player's world unfolds differently. All of this runs locally and offline: the AI models ship with the game and run on your machine. Netshell never connects to a third-party AI service such as ChatGPT or Claude. You can turn the AI off entirely, in which case the NPCs stop chatting and the game continues with its authored story. Some Steam store and trailer assets were created with AI assistance and then edited/curated by the development team. During gameplay, Netshell only uses AI to generate in-character NPC text.

Limited use of AI ONLY for the generation of the hundreds of merchandise label textures for the items sold in the MOR MART store scene, as this tedious task, as a single-developer would have taken me dozens of hours. Additionally, seeing as I am a broke college student, I cannot afford to pay an art team. Instead that time was put towards the more artistically valuable parts of the game. All other art, naming, texturing modeling, sound design in the game was handmade by me, with the exception of a few sounds sourced from royalty free websites under royalty free commercial licensing, but then further edited by myself.

The game's simulation, visuals, terrain, climate modelling, (Illustrations are hand-drawn and human-made), and rendering are produced entirely by physics-based and procedural systems, not generative AI. Generative AI was used only to assist in drafting some of the game's descriptive and informational text (such as in-game reference and classification descriptions). All such text was first written by the developer, with AI helping to correct it, and was then reviewed and edited by the developer.

Some background elements were partially generated using AI. Localization into languages other than German was carried out with the help of AI. AI was used as a development aid (to help implement certain systems in the game). I am a solo indie developer and wanted to tell an engaging horror story set in an anime/Japanese-inspired world. Without AI, I unfortunately would never have been able to create a project like this!

This game uses generative AI tools as part of the production process. Its main uses include assisting with the creation of some image assets used in the Steam store page and in the game, source material for some background music and sound effects, and assistance with translating and refining some text. AI-generated visual and audio materials are not used as-is. The development team reviews them, then edits, crops, color adjusts, resizes, volume adjusts, or otherwise processes them as needed so they fit the game. Text assisted by generative AI for translation or wording is reviewed by the development team for context and meaning, and revised when needed before being used. Some players may feel uncertain about the use of generative AI, or consider it an important factor when choosing what to play. We hope that describing how it is used in this game as clearly as possible will help those players make their own decision. Generative AI is not used during gameplay to create new text, images, audio, dialogue, quests, or gameplay content in response to player input.
